Home Remodeling Tips for the Weekend Warrior

Wisdom is learning from others’ mistakes rather than making them yourself. Someone once said that, or at least, Unlimited Contracting thinks they should have! Being a weekend warrior is not for the faint of heart. It takes a lot of ambition, intelligence and creativity to learn how to do multiple projects for a bathroom, kitchen, or family room renovation. These tasks can be both physically and mentally exhausting, so it’s best to do as much recon as you can in order to be prepared for anything that comes up!
Take advice from those who have gone before! Heed these home remodeling tips for the weekend warrior and avoid the most common mistakes of people just like you!

1. Being overconfident in your abilities
There are some things you may feel confident doing, but others may be better left to the pros. You don’t have to DIY the entire project. For example, you can do the construction, plumbing and tile yourself, but leave the electrical to an expert like Unlimited Contracting. Don’t worry, it’s still considered DIY!
2. Changing your mind halfway through
Don’t let anything change your original vision! Just because someone else doesn’t like the wall color you’ve chosen or thinks a farmhouse sink might limit your kitchen’s functionality, you don’t have to change the plan for their sake!

3. Forgetting to allow extra space

There are standard measurements for nearly every home fixture and appliance, not to mention manufacturers’ guidelines. These should give you a good idea about where they should be placed. You also need to consider common sense factors like flow of traffic and how close the toilet paper holder should be to the commode!

4. Not allowing for surprises

Even the best laid plans sometimes go awry. You never know what you may find when you start remodeling, especially if you are dealing with an older home. Allot yourself a little extra time in case you find mold, termite damage, or a water leak. You should also allow a little extra money in your budget to handle the unexpected. It’s always better to prepare for the worst!
5. Failure to plan for every step
Not only do you need the skills to do the work to your own satisfaction, but you also need the right tools and equipment to transport your materials, haul away debris, and dispose of unused materials appropriately. If you don’t have access to the tools needed, you may have to borrow or rent these for a daily fee. Don’t forget to add these costs into your budget!
